Miguel, der mit der warmen, charismatischen Stimme, Luiz an Percussion und Schlagzeug, Pedro und Alex an den Gitarren, der Jorge am Keyboard und Nuno am treibenden Bass – das sind SECRECY. Gegruendet 2001 veroeffentlichten sie letztes Jahr ein Demo und nun ist das Debut BENEATH THE LIES gefolgt. Was mir zu Anfang gleich positiv auffaellt, ist das einfach gehaltene Cover. Beim ersten Durchhoeren erinnern sie mich an HIM und an die 69 EYES... auch beim zweifachen – und doch sind erfreulicherweise Unterschiede zu hoeren. Gothic Rock in all seinen rockigen und schoenen Facetten mit ihrem eigenen persoenlichen Touch. Die Reise von BENEATH THE LIES nimmt uns mit durch die tiefsten Abgruende der Liebe. Dies schaffen sie aber, ohne uns gleich zu Tode zu langweilen oder zu quaelen. Die Lieder haben durchgehend eingaengige Melodien und Refrains, aber ein richtiger Hit laesst sich nicht herauskristallisieren. Meine Lieblinge hier drauf heissen zum Beispiel PERFECT ISOLATION, WHO’S TALKING WHO’S CRYING und HOLLOW MAN. Als Cover haben sie sich WONDERFUL LIFE von BLACK (1987) ausgesucht – kein schlechter Versuch – aber die urspruengliche Stimmung des Liedes vermag sich nicht zu uebertragen. Am Ende des Albums ein kleines Schmankerl – nur Synthesiser und Stimme – namens CRY. BENEATH THE LIES unbedingt von Anfang bis Schluss anhoeren. Bravo! 9 Punkte (Angie) – hier bestellen

Portugal rocks and SECRECY produce proof once more! Miguel, the guy with the warm and charming voice, Luiz on percussion and drums, Pedro and Alex on the guitars, Jorge on keyboards and Nuno on the driving bass – that’s SECRECY. Founded in 2001, they released a demo last year and now their debut album BENEATH THE LIES followed. What catches my eye first is the simplicity of the cover, which is just straight forward. The music reminds me to HIM and 69 EYES when I heard it just in random for the first time... also the second round does – after I can hear differences fortunately. Gothic rock in all its beautiful rocking characteristics I’d say, with their personal touch. The journey of BENEATH THE LIES takes us along to the deepest abyss of love. This they manage without torture or bore us to death.The songs are all catchy tunes, but a real chartbreaker I can’t find on the album. My favourites are called for example PERFECT ISOLATION, WHO’S TALKING WHO’S CRYING and HOLLOW MAN. As a cover they took WONDERFUL LIFE from BLACK (1987) – not a bad try – but it’s not capable to transmit the original mood of the song. In the end of the cd I fell completely in love with a song - just synthesiser and voice – called CRY. You gotta give BENEATH THE LIES a try from beginning untill the end. SECRECY"Beneath the Lies"

Para los que crecimos con el rock Gótico como principal influencia, tenemos un gran pesar por el momento que padece este estilo desde hace algunos años. A la desaparición de las grandes bandas, no le siguieron la aparición generacional de otras y sinceramente, salvo algunas honrosas excepciones el panorama quedó bastante desolador. Algunos creyeron ver la evolución del estilo hacia el invento denominado “Gothic Metal”, por suerte esto ha perdido fuerza y cada vez hay menos bandas de estas, ahora parece que la evolución gira hacia otros derroteros más descabellados todavía como el psychobilly o el batcave , que aunque no tengo nada en contra de estos, no tienen nada que ver con el rock Gótico.
Por suerte cada vez más aparecen bandas como Secrecy, que manteniendo profundamente arraigado el espíritu de los 80 ( época dorada del Rock Gótico ), saben darle un toque moderno, lleno de calidad y dinamismo. La banda no se puede decir que suene a una banda concreta, pero a la vez se nota la influencia de los grandes del género. La voz aunque es la clásica del estilo, no se puede negar que queda ideal para esta música y le da ese toque oscuro y grave que necesita el conjunto. La batería siempre comedida sin grandes acelerones y sobre todo las guitarras, ni muy fuertes ni muy flojas, siempre bien llevadas, y controladas. La inclusión del teclado le da ese toque moderno y a la vez clásico bien se use como sintetizador o como piano clásico.
En cuanto a los temas es difícil elegir alguno ya que el álbum es muy homogéneo y cualquier canción podría ser la mejor. Sin embargo si podría citar una curiosidad en el tema número ocho, es la versión de un clásico de los 80, que poco tenía que ver con el gótico como es tema “Wonderful Life” the “Black” el cual ha sido adaptado con muy buen resultado.
Sobre todo lo que sorprende y a la vez alegra es la producción. Han hecho un excelente trabajo, el conjunto suena cristalino y cada sonido bien definido y conjuntado. Nunca me habría imaginado que sería desde Portugal de donde saldría la mejor banda de rock Gótico del 2004. Ahora sólo queda que otras bandas sigan su ejemplo y podamos hablar de una escena fuerte y duradera.

"BENEATH THE LIES" CD 2004 (Includes interactive track with band's history and "Perfect Isolation" videoclip. Debut cd)Instruments played by the group: guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and male vocals.
The music: gothic metal, or "goth" plus "metal" or whatever it will be..., with a lot of good things and the same number of things that avoid it to be even better (and please notice that I have not said "the same number of things that make it bad"), let's start with one crictical aspect: they insist on something a lot of groups have done before, and in this sense they bring us nothing different, and that is always a dangerous zone, SECRECY manage to pass through with good tracks, with excellent tracks I would mark, they are very good doing very intense tracks with that dark and catchy rhythm, intense emotion specially injected by big guitars, and of course a deep voice as it should be in the genre. Sincerely, except for the above mentioned and specific tracks like "Who's Talking, Who's Crying" and "Hollow Man" that become maybe more metallic, unimaginative and routine or a track like "Cold as Ice" that is not bad but I see it slightly out of place, as well as the last "Cry" (piano, voice, keyboards and maybe too much pop), I can't find any other fault in the tracks, the rest are perfect samples of strong goth/metal full of dark passion. There are details that are totally of their own, concretely small arrangements that are very curious and bring a more (maybe) conventional rock (or rock-pop) touch to the music; the keyboards atmospheres have also a wider language; but these two factors are sometimes so subtle that they are scarcely noticed, they are also very attractive melodies and, besides, I like the obtained sound, it is dense and totally compact but with a kind of crepuscular or ochreous tonality and also a little refulgent..., and what about that cover version of "Wonderful Life" by BLACK?, a good choice, as well as the own "Arise and Fall", a great track with personal ideas and a different approach (atmospheric-symphonic). As I said, the only problem for me is that there seems that they are using all the potential of their creativity in formulas a little worn-out; six of one and half a half a dozen of the other, choose what you like the most, but in 8 of these 12 tracks this is one of those rare cases of a band that is really convincing even not being totally original.

Secrecy - Beneath The Lies

Os portugueses Secrecy são uma banda de Valongo resultante da junção (em 2001) de elementos de bandas já extintas como é o caso dos Ignoto Deo e My Fallen Angel. Miguel Ribeiro (vocais), Pedro Paiva (guitarras), Jorge Oliveira (teclados), Nuno de Sousa (baixo) e Luiz Ferreira (bateria) editam «Beneath The Lies», o seu primeiro álbum, depois das demos CD «Secrecy» e «IV» em 2002, respectivamente. “One Day”, "Falling", "Secrecy" e "Arise And Fall" constituem os pontos de referência da base musical deste «Beneath The Lies» com uma ambiência nada anómala ao gothic rock de uns Fields Of The Nephilim ou The Sisters Of Mercy, passando por algumas sonoridades mais pesadas (quase a roçar um gothic metal) com toques de (guitarra à) Paradise Lost, acompanhado sempre pela voz soturna de Miguel Ribeiro que em nada nos surpreende para quem já está habituado aos Scream Silence, Dreadful Shadows, Love Like Blood ou mesmo os The 69 Eyes. Apesar de todas estas comparações, é importante referir que não lhes tiro mérito algum. É pena que algumas das ideias já façam parte da nossa colecção de CD's mas quem é que não terá referências evidentes num primeiro disco? À parte das ligeiras limitações de originalidade, é uma proposta que se ouve com agrado, com ideias no lugar certo e uma maturidade de composição já bem desenvolvida. É óbvio que existem arestas e pormenores a ser “limados” mas à medida que prossigam carreira, adicionado à recente aquisição de um segundo guitarrista, este colectivo nortenho dá mostras que pretende (e consegue) voos mais altos. Para já, os amantes do estilo não terão qualquer dificuldade em digerir o apelo deste interessante projecto lusitano. Gravado nos estúdios Rec'N'Roll - com produção a ficar a cargo de Luís Barros - «Beneath The Lies» encontra-se disponível pela Ethereal Sounds Works e traz como bónus o videoclip de “Perfect Isolation”, o primeiro single a retirar do debut juntamente com “Wonderful Life”, uma cover dos Black. SECRECY - ENTREVISTA

Nascidos das cinzas dos Ignoto Deo e My Fallen Angel, os Secrecy são uma das grandes sensações do metal gótico português. O tão esperado disco de estreia, ‘Beneath the Lies’, foi recentemente editado pela Ethereal Sound Works e dá a conhecer uns portuenses não só cheios de estilo mas aptos para adentrar no mercado internacional e reforçar a qualidade do nosso panorama musical.

Após um bom historial de espectáculos ao vivo, porquê só agora o álbum? Que importância tiveram esses concertos para o amadurecimento dos Secrecy?
Os Secrecy começaram a compor os seus temas em inícios de 2002, altura em que te traçaram alguns objectivos. A banda pretendeu consolidar o seu projecto ao vivo como primeiro objectivo, tendo sido totalmente atingido com bastantes actuações um pouco por todo o país. A meio desse percurso surgiu-nos a oportunidade de assinar um contrato com a Ethereal Sound Works. Esse contrato possibilitou-nos a gravação de «Beneath the Lies». O álbum sai agora em inícios de 2005 que julgamos ser o timing perfeito para o seu lançamento, bem como também para a nossa editora.

Nota-se alguma preocupação vossa e da editora na apresentação gráfica do trabalho, disponibilizando no cd algum conteúdo multimédia. Consideram esses extras uma mais valia para uma banda, em que sentido?
Sim, é sempre uma mais valia quando no interior do nosso CD podemos mostrar um pouco mais de nós, da nossa história, de como apareceu a banda e das gravações do álbum. Um conceito interessante a ser explorado em próximos trabalhos da banda.
Expliquem-me melhor o conceito da capa:
inicialmente temos uma personagem do sexo feminino aparentemente nostálgica, sentada numa cadeira; na contracapa permanece apenas a cadeira, lembrando algo soturno, melancólico.O conceito que se encontra subjacente à capa, contra-capa e inlay foi baseado no título do álbum Beneath the Lies». A foto da capa, integra uma personagem feminina que olha para algo distante e demonstra uma total alienação perante a personagem masculina que a toca. Esta, representa uma relação, que não é mais que uma falsa realidade, uma mentira. Na sequência - contra-capa - as personagens desapareceram ficando apenas a cadeira, que simboliza o falso mundo de mentiras no qual se suportava a relação das personagens. A relação não existe mais, nada pode existir se suportado por mentiras a não ser as próprias mentiras. Mas estas também desaparecem e com o tempo apenas fica o mundo real. Mundo esse que é quase vazio, apenas preenchido por memórias da felicidade muitas vezes irreais e que há muito desapareceram. É essa a ideia que nos é transmitida pelo cenário da antiga fábrica de seca do bacalhau, onde os pilares, que outrora serviram para suportar a estrutura onde o peixe era salgado e secado, fazem agora lembrar cruzes de um velho cemitério - memórias que foram enterradas. Este é o conceito que serve de base, no entanto outros enquadramentos serão possíveis de efectuar com base nos quatro elementos compostos - A mulher, o Homem, A Cadeira e o Vazio - assim como na sequência subtractiva constituida pela capa, contra capa e inlay. De notar ainda a particularidade que existe quando se retira o CD, representando a cadeira - o suporte, as mentiras - e que é em si também a musica. Sem o CD fica apenas o vazio, e por analogia o silêncio.

Ao vivo, vocês apresentam uma imagem pouco formal, tocando o guitarrista com um chapéu de cowboy. Nunca vos aconteceu serem mais ou menos creditados por essa mesma imagem?
Bem, isso sempre aconteceu dessa forma porque a banda sempre teve como lema a liberdade visual, principalmente nos primeiros anos de vida. Neste momento as coisas são um pouco diferentes e nos concertos de apresentação do álbum já se notam as diferenças em relação à primeira fase da banda. Achamos sim que o visual da banda é quase tão importante quanto a música, por isso estamos a cuidar desse pormenor com cada vez maior afinco.

Ou seja, nunca puseram em causa o vosso valor como músicos, por tal "aparência" em palco?
Isso cremos que não, até porque temos tido ao longo dos tempos críticas bem positivas aos nossos temas por pessoas que nem têm necessariamente a ver com o universo gótico.

Ao longo das faixas fica-se com a sensação de que o vocalista quase nunca muda de timbre vocal, chega mesmo a lembrar, constantemente, o grupo Sisters of Mercy («Temple of Love»). O público, ao ouvir uma faixa vossa na rádio, não conhecendo os Secrecy, poderia associá-la a eles, não receiam isso?
É interessante essa questão, já que, por exemplo, uma das entrevistas que nos fizeram apontaram que, dentro do darkwave rock nos afastamos definitivamente dos clássicos como os Sisters. É evidente que a voz do Miguel tem as suas semelhanças, mas não cremos que seja assim tão 'colado' ao Andrew Eldrich, e cremos mesmo que o instrumental solidifica essa diferença.

Qual é o significado do primeiro single «Perfect Isolation»?
«Perfect Isolation» fala-nos de uma visão introspectiva acerca de um mundo construído por uma pessoa que vive à parte de tudo, e apesar de estar rodeado pela vida e pela sociedade isola-se no seu mundo. Tem a ver um pouco com a cultura do anonimato nas grandes cidades em que milhões de pessoas partilham o mesmo espaço físico mas são anónimas umas em relação às outras.

Não se consideram um pouco contraditórios? Afinal o isolamento perfeito é associado a uma utopia: se ficassem 'perfeitamente isolados' como poderiam mostrar o vosso trabalho ao grande público?
Isso é verdade, afinal de contas um dos nossos objectivos é o de chegar ao maior número possível de pessoas. Para tal, o perfeito isolamento não é uma das nossas estratégias, mas o «Perfect Isolation» pode contribuir para uma maior visibilidade da banda, já que acreditamos que é um tema forte e com uma mensagem interessante, acerca do dia a dia isolacionista de muitas pessoas. Além do mais, «Perfect Isolation» é apenas um personagem inventado para contar uma história com música...

Consideram haver um circuito não só de fãs mas também de bares, lojas, etc, gótico em Portugal?
Bem, em relação a há uns tempos atrás, em que o gótico quase desapareceu de cena, pensamos que vão havendo mais oportunidades dentro desse universo. Há muitas pessoas que são fãs desse movimento. Apesar de tudo pensamos que se trata de revivalismo, e que poderá ter os seus dias contados. O que é facto é que nós fazemos música não só para as pessoas enquadradas nesse universo como também tentamos chegar junto do público em geral, porque achamos que o nosso trabalho ultrapassa as fronteiras do gótico.

Em 2003 actuaram com uma banda conhecida um pouco por todo o mundo, embora apenas no meio gótico: os Inkubus Sukkubus. Isso contribui para que os Secrecy conseguissem abrir algumas 'portas' até então fechadas?
Sim, é sempre um momento importante na vida de uma banda aparecer num concerto de músicos consagrados como os Inkubus Sukkubus. Para além de grandes músicos são uma referência no que diz respeito ao movimento pagão. Foi uma excelente noite e o vídeo amador que possuímos desse concerto faz-nos ter a certeza que estivemos à altura dos Inkubus.

Numa entrevista afirmaram desgostar de um estilo musical "dito mais extremo", porque o consideravam atingir apenas minorias. Assim, porque decidiram enveredar pelo estilo gótico se este, pelo menos em Portugal, parece ser um pouco marginalizado e abranger apenas minorias?
Apesar de tudo, o 'gótico' que praticamos funde-se muito com um vulgar e mainstream rock, conforme se pode ouvir em «Beneath The Lies». O caminho é continuar a cruzar estes dois mundos e chegar ao maior número possível de pessoas, porque temos a certeza que seremos apreciados por mais pessoas se tivermos a oportunidade de nos mostrarmos a elas.

Normalmente, a nossa sociedade associa baixo preço a má qualidade. Não querendo referir nomes, «Beneath the Lies» está a um preço um pouco abaixo da média em comparação com outros artistas. Poderá ser interpretado, tal facto, como uma estratégia de marketing vossa e da editora, para assim poder chegar a um maior número de público?
É objectivo da nossa editora divulgar a música que se faz principalmente em Portugal e fazê-la chegar ao maior número de público possível. Daí que o preço por eles recomendado seja um preço abaixo ao praticado no mercado pois são da opinião de que o preço actualmente praticado é excessivo e por vezes factor impeditivo da aquisição por diversos potenciais compradores. É opinião da nossa editora que a qualidade e o preço não se encontram relacionados e que é possível disponibilizar bons produtos de excelente qualidade a preços justos e acessíveis.

Secrecy are back with their first official full-length album entitled "Beneath the Lies". I was quite curious to check this one out, after listening to their single a couple of months ago. "Perfect Isolation" is its name, and it came with the self-titled track plus a cover from the Stanley Black original "Wonderful Life". The cover is very well done, it's just a shame that most of the people who know just a little about them, have that knowledge due to the cover, and not from something that they wrote by themselves. I'm not saying that the band did something wrong or anything, I'm just saying that it's something that happens too often, if you ask me, specially in radio shows. Not just with Secrecy, it happens all the time. I remember some years ago, everyone knew HIM because they played a cover of "Wicked Game", and that song was playing everywhere. But maybe I'm wrong or it will be different with Secrecy. I really like their cover of "Wonderfull Life", that's not the point, but if by any chance I cought they playing on the radio, TV or whatever, I'd prefer to hear "Perfect Isolation" instead of the cover, simple because it was written by them. And let me just point again that have absolutely nothing against covers, I actually really like them, but when it comes to singles, I think it should be the band's own creations.

But I don't want to get too far from what's important here, which is Secrecy's new album. If you are not yet aware of this band, they come from Portugal and were formed in 2001. It's not hard to describe their music style. Gothic Metal as gothic as it can be, with some deep vocals, nice guitars with drum pace that can be either slow as a little faster, and the obviously presence of keyboards, as the final touch. After listening to this album a couple of times, there is no doubt on my mind that there was a lot of effort put into it. Gothic Metal is not my favourite music style, but it's definitely one the genres I like the most. But sometimes there are a couple of albums that come out and are very slow-paced, and I don't have much patience for that. Not that I don't like that sort of thing, but eventually I get bored of it since the songs all sound alike. Fortunately for me, Secrecy's "Beneath the Lies" is not like that. Sure, the majority of the songs are much more slow-paced than the rest, but as longs as there are three of them that are just a little faster, that's good enough for me.

As for the best tracks, it's not a very easy choice. "Perfect Isolation" and "Wonderful Life" are definitely amongst the best songs of the album, but I've already knew both of them from their single, so that might have something to do with it. "Cold as Ice" is probably the song I'd choose as my other favourite, it's one of those Gothic Metal songs with fast pace and catchy chorus parts, so what's not to like? "Hollow Man" and "Arise and Fall" are also great tracks, not fast, not slow, maybe mid-paced is the correct term. Really great songs!And it just came to me that this is one of those albums that the more you listen to it, the more you'll end up liking it. It helps a lot when the songs are well crafted and the musicians know what they're doing. Portugal is not exactly a country with many traditions when it comes to Gothic Metal, but maybe Secrecy will change that, because for what I'm able to see (hear) here, they sure have the quality and potential for that.

Beneath The Lies CD
Os Secrecy foram fundados em 2001, quando os ex Ignoto Deo (uma banda gothic rock nascida em 1992) se uniram ao vocalista Miguel Ribeiro (ex My Fallen Angel, uma banda gótica nacional entretanto extinta) e gravaram a sua primeira demo em CD, fruto de uma iniciativa promovida pela C.M. de Valongo. A banda adopta o nome Secrecy, inspirado pelo tema homónimo e, após um longo historial de concertos, assinam um contrato de edição com a Ethereal Sound Works e, finalmente em 2004, surge o tão aguardado álbum (produção a cargo de Luís Barros, nos estúdios Rec'N'Roll). A sonoridade apresentada por este quinteto de Valongo, com influências demasiado visíveis na onda de Sisters of Mercy e Love Like Blood, não traz grandes novidades, caracterizando-se por ser um rock gótico suave e ligeiramente sombrio, devidamente acompanhado por vocalizações limpas e que quase ou nunca mudam de timbre. O trabalho de teclado e guitarra revela alguns pormenores interessantes, indo de encontro ao intimismo em «Cry», e dinamismo em «Secrecy». «Arise and Fall», além de ter um ligeiro travo à la Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell) na fase final e fazer lembrar ‘O Corvo’ de Alex Proyas (com Brandon Lee), é uma das faixas mais cativantes. Assim, apesar de aliado a uma sensação de dejá-vu e homogeneidade, destacam-se momentos bem intensos em «Arise and Fall», «Secrecy», «Sins for Love» ou «Hollow Man». No que respeita à componente lírica, o menu varia entre a solidão e o amor eterno, o veneno e o mistério, ou os opostos vida/morte servidos a sépia, ou seja, lúgubre mas quente. Acompanhado por uma faixa multimédia, ainda poderão ter acesso ao vídeo ‘Perfect Isolation’ e conhecer os elementos de Secrecy através de algumas imagens. Melódico e energicamente satisfatório, numa musicalidade agradável, ‘Beneath the lies’, agradará com certeza aos fãs do género.

Aqui segue a lista dos próximos concertos já confirmados. Relembramos que o "fim de semana FNAC/Lisboa" não se concretizará a 12/13 de Março. As datas definitivas para os showcases FNAC serão divulgadas brevemente. Para já, uma alteração a registar no que diz respeito ao nosso concerto inserido no festival RUC (Rádio Universidade de Coimbra). O evento não será no Le Son, mas sim no Museu dos Transportes em Coimbra, junto do Hotel Íbis.

Entretanto contamos convosco já no próximo sábado no XPTO Bar, Valongo para um concerto que se prevê de casa cheia!!!

Nova review "Hard-Wired" (UK)

From the off, this stands out as a quality album – with a good solid foundation in the form of the rhythm, solid, penetrating vocals, and an overall sense of a professionally produced piece of work.
This is Goth Rock (with the emphasis on Rock) with a pride and passion in what it stands for. The vocals (male fronted) are deep and rich – enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Don’t ask me why, but I’m reminded of Peter Steele from Type-O-Negative. This is luxury melted chocolate laid on thick. Quality!
The opening track, ‘One Day’, a guitar lead piece sets the scene for the rest of the album – light enough to catch your attention, it’s a good piece to lead you into the second track, ‘Falling’. This is a distinctly passionate track, and will pull at your heartstrings – the combination of those vocals and electric guitars working well, to create a thoughtful yet dynamic number.
‘Perfect Isolation’ carries on the journey down the same road – vocals dripping with passion, albeit in a slightly lighter vein.
‘Secrecy’ is an equally intense track, more upbeat than most tracks preceding it. Again this is dynamic and full of direction.
In fact the descriptions of the tracks above hold true for all of the 12 tracks on this album – lyrics dripping with feeling and passion (maybe this is not an album to listen to if you’ve just lost a loved one?), and music that fits the vocals perfectly, creating a package that you could gift wrap in velvet and give to a lover.
This album has been very well put together, and the band definitely know what they are doing.
The cover of ‘Wonderful Life by Black is a bit of a surprise; as to me this track is not as passionate or intense as those around it on the album. Despite this, it is a very good cover, and adds a darker edge to an already great song.
Following this we have a change in tempo and style in terms of the track ‘Cold as Ice’, which definitely moves the gear further up the rock scale – chugging guitar rifts are the order of the day here.
It’s nice to see that this flavour of music is carried through into the track ‘Hollow man’, and in doing so the album seems to change pace, breaking up the sound and making it very listenable instead of very samey.
Finishing off the album we have the acoustic number ‘Cry’ – a piano led track, with clear crisp vocals that make for a relaxing number. Very nice.
Secrecy have a winner of an album here. If passion is your thing, then this is an album for you. Very well done lads!

Os primeiros segundos do álbum "Beneath The Lies" do quinteto português "Secrecy" fazem lembrar um pouco Rock Alternativo. Só mais tarde nos apercebemos que afinal é Rock Gótico, e coloca a música de outras bandas conhecidas a léguas.

Já a capa do álbum apresenta-se cheia de estilo e em tons "sepia", o que coloca qualquer pessoa curiosa. Não deixa transparecer nada sobre a forma decente e sem "clichés" da música e procura contar uma história. A música é reconhecida por uns como Rock Gótico, por outros como Gothic-Metal. Eu, contudo, tendo a considerá-la Rock Gótico, já que o material de "Beneath The Lies" não é "pesado" e as composições tendem a orientar-se por estruturas típicas de Rock.

Gostei de "One Day", cheio de força. Para além de um ritmo dinâmico, acentuado por excelentes sons de teclados,é muito bem acompanhado pela voz do Miguel B. Ribeiro. É uma música puramente de estilo Rock Gótico, que deixa qualquer fã dos The 69 Eyes de "coração quente". Podem-se ainda traçar paralelismos com bandas como "The Cascades" e "Zeraphine", assim como ao rock dos HIM e elegância dos Lacuna Coil.

Os Secrecy são suficientemente inteligentes para se deixarem inspirar, mas não estão "presos" a nada. A música "Secrecy" é uma das melhores de Rock Gótico que tenho ouvido nos últimos tempos. A música brilha através de uma melodia contagiosa e culmina com um refrão espantoso. Também em momentos mais calmos os Secrecy conseguem convencer em pleno - melhor exemplo é o tema "A Myth", cheio de emoção e sonhador. O Cover "Wonderful Life" por sua vez não convence completamente.

"Beneath The Lies" não é um álbum que possa lançar muitos singles, mas como um todo é muito bom. É homogéneo, "adulto" e profundo, cheio de melodias bonitas.

If you are instantly suspicious, as I am, of anything determinedly rocky, then take my word for it that SECRECY have achieved something majorly impressive in their ‘Beneath The Lies’ album, conjuring up a warm, soft exterior, with deep, moving internal mental organs. They hover between Goth and various rocklike forms, but on the emotional aide of actvity, and the respect they are now garnering in their Portugese home should be spread far and wide. (I’m not actually sure
who answered my questions, but they’re intertesting chaps.)

How much do you worry about sounding like anyone else - early on the album suggests you might be quite an old fashioned Goth band? Then it all opens up.
”In the beginning all the bands tend to imitate their alter egos, and most of the times they begin to play other band’s songs, their favourites. Secrecy don’t want to sound like anyone else, but many times the songs end up sounding a little bit like other bands even if we don’t want it to happen. Maybe it’s a part of the process of growing up as a band, but we have accomplished our own sound with ‘Beneath the Lies’. Our producer helped us to evolve and try some different approaches and the final result was a nice surprise.”

Do people think you’re a weird rock band - with a Goth past and yet making music which is often quite relaxing in its atmosphere?
”Definitively!! Miguel’s vocals are unusual, and the mix between odd guitar riffs, keyboard landscapes and punchy rhythm patterns lead us to heterogeneous environments such as powerful goth/rock in ‘Hollow Man’, ‘One Day’ and ‘Cold as Ice’, classic gothic rock in ‘Who’s Talking, Who’s Crying’, ‘Falling’ and ‘Perfect Isolation’, the sadness and loneliness of ‘A Myth’, ‘Sins for Love’ and ‘Cry’ and the progressive landscapes of ‘Secrecy’ and ‘Arise and Fall’. All this variety make our songs sound pretty different from each other. Ohhh, and then there’s our ‘Wonderful Life’ cover!”

What do you like about your slower moments? And why are they there? In rock terms this is definitely unusual.
”Our songs are a little bit like each one of us. Sometimes you have melancholic moments, you think about your life and the past, and then you get lonely, sad and introspective, like if there wouldn’t be a chance to fix the problems because you’re a grain of sand in a huge beach. It was one of those moments that inspired us in ‘A myth’. That song is one of the most beautiful tracks in ‘Beneath the Lies’, and we love to play it live because it’s slow, beautiful, sad - but it’s powerful!”

It seems important to you to have emotion in the songs, instead of going for any harsh and comic dark rock approach. Why? How important are lyrics to the band, because a lot of bands don’t really rely on them in any way.
”All Secrecy’s songs have stories to tell, it’s not only the musical discharge with no meaning. We emphasize our work in the lyrics too, we don’t want to create hollow speed-gothish songs with silly lyrics, just to fit in the sound atmosphere. We try to give a sense to our instrumental songs with poems that mean something.”

What elements of rock, from the darker varieties are definitely included along with Goth and where do these influences come from? Have they always been of interest or have you moved more towards rock recently?
”We have a lot of different influences amongst us, as you can notice from our songs. Those classic 80s bands like Joy Division, the Mission, Bauhaus and Peter Murphy, The Cure, Siouxsie, Fields of the Nephilim are there for sure, but we’re also influenced by other things, from Pink Floyd to Nirvana even pop/rock stuff like U2 or The Sound. Everything that we listen can influence us even if we don’t notice that, but Secrecy is becoming more and more Secrecy’s biggest influence.”

What clichés won’t you allow? Rock can be a minefield of stupidity.
”Some clichés apply: Goth music is only for black dressed people.
Ordinary people can’t like goth bands.
Goth bands come from England or Germany.”

What is the final ballad about, and why is so soft?
”It’s one of those rainy winter days when you’re alone, thinking about your life and, well, life, it’s not always what we planned. Miguel had this lyrics and Jorge came up with that piano line when he first looked at it. We thought it was the erfect way to end this voyage? An odd footer in our ‘Beneath the Lies’ document, but then, it can be an intro to our next album. It’s curious that the audiences give us a tremendous feedback about this song. Maybe all that quietness and silence sometimes can be louder than a death/doom decibel discharge?”

You call yourself Death Grind, but in what way is that supposed to be taken seriously? Most bands I have heard of that sort sound like Napalm Death reborn with vomiting singers? You have such elegance in so much of your music.
”Well, I think Death Grind is very hard to describe Secrecy. We use to entitle ourselves Darkwave Rock. We don’t really like ‘doom’ voices, it’s not what we want to do at all. We try to make melodic songs that tell something about life or we invent pure fiction characters and give them life. The musical part of secrecy’s songs it’s just as important as the lyrics, we can’t think about them separately. Our path is not to become a doom band for sure, we’re exploring the goth/rock landscapes, it’s what we like to do the most.”

Were Ignoto Deo and My Fallen Angel (two of their former outfits) well known bands in Portugal? Have you been able to impress people early on because of past reputation?”
Ignoto Deo was a curious band in the northern Portuguese territories. They gigged a lot but they never had the chance to come into the light, maybe because they never had stability to accomplish bigger things. They constantly lost their singers and they remained several years without gigging. My Fallen Angel also never had the chance to consolidate their work, and the musicians were learning how to play by
then. The songs were quite simple but again the band never had the time to build a solid career. They split up because some members wouldn’t want to continue in the music scene.
Secrecy was born when Miguel ended up winning some free recording studio hours and decided to invite Pedro, Nuno and Jorge (ex-Secrecy drummer) to record some tracks. The result of this joint-venture was the band’s kick off demo with the songs ‘Secrecy’ and ‘Cold as Ice.’ Secrecy’s roots were sown by then and now we’re growing slowly but stronger every day.”

What previous types of music were Jorge Oliveira and Luiz Ferreira involved with?
”Jorge Oliveira played classic when he was a child. He played some rock bands (in the garage) at the age of 18-25 and he worked in a big music store in Porto selling pro audio software and hardware. He’s pretty much influenced by bands like The Cure, Clan of Xymox, The Chameleons, The Mission and even different things like Pink Floyd and older Marillion stuff. Luiz has been playing the drums since he was a young boy and he participated in all kinds of projects, from grunge through jazz, from pop to metal. His most important band before Secrecy was The Melancholic Youth of Jesus, a very well known indie rock band in the 90s here in Portugal. His favourite drummers belong to the Seattle bands school, and he’s very professional when it comes to work hard to accomplish the band’s success.”

Within a year you started getting good supports - based on reputation? Were you dong things which were making people sit up and notice you?
”In the beginning we started playing in small clubs but quickly we were able to get the attention of some promoters that called us for bigger performances supporting international bands. We had some luck in those days, but we worked hard to consolidate our songs and that helped us to reach the spotlights. Miguel’s performance onstage is quite amazing, a mix between power and insanity, the guy is unique!!!! The fact that there are only a few goth-rock bands in Portugal helped us to gather the attention of the underground scene.”

Modesty aside, how are you being perceived at home, and is it different abroad?
”By now it’s hard to know, we’re still at the beginning. We’re playing in some big Portuguese radios right now. In the biggest rock radio in Portugal (Best Rock FM) we were the Portuguese band of the week, last week. We think we’re building something very slowly. People are becoming to listen to us day by day and we’re noticing that our website is getting more and more visitors. The Portuguese market usually excludes darker music, the radios say it’s too underground to have airplay, so they definitively don’t play metal/goth/noisy music unless it’s 4:00am in the morning and it’s a metal show for those sleepless guys that like noisy stuff. Now we must try to get out to Europe, where rock is way more respected, although we think we can have our Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame here in Portugal.”

How big is the Goth scene out there and do you find Goths turning up their noses thinking you’re too rock, and rock fans thinking you’re still too Goth?
”It’s an interesting question. The goth clubs are coming back to light right now, and we’re having more bands playing goth sound, like Moonspell (well known all over the world, a little heavier), Heavenwood, Phantom Vision (electro), Aenima and even Icon and Black Roses (more commercial). We think the Goths in Portugal tend to reject
national projects, it’s not the fact or being more or less goth it’s in the country’s culture. What comes from Portugal is always bad for them, it’s recorded in their brains!! Fortunately for us not everyone is like that, we know much Goths that love our work and we get many support messages telling how proud they are about what we’re doing. We think we have both rock and goth fans with us, more people will love us if they have the opportunity to listen to our work.”

Depois de ouvir a DEMO do ano passado fiquei curioso de ver a evolução desta banda. Os portugueses não se tornaram concorrentes aos Moonspell porque não seguiram o caminho simples do Rock Gótico. Seguiram antes um caminho tradicional e "escuro" do Rock sob influência inglesa com harmonia e melodia finladesa. O canto "quente" é acompanhado por "Keyboards" e guitarras que lhes dão um ritmo bem agradável. Deve-se associar o estilo de Pop a este tipo de música depois de haver bandas como Him ou 69 Eyes. Principalmente os refrões são muito agradáveis, venham eles carregados de melancolia ou não. Os seus temas originais convencem-me completamente, ao contrário do Cover de Black "Wonderful Live". No entanto, músicas como "A Myth", "Falling" ou "Cold as Ice" fazem esquecer o Cover. Já que menciono os músicos da Europa do Norte (Sisters encontram-se com Wayne no concerto dos Him em finais dos anos 90), também posso mencionar os Secret Discovery e Love Like Blood. Um álbum harmónico e pesado que deve entusiasmar toda a gente da minha geração, assim como Teenies a comer gelado de framboesa.

Rock gótico no seu melhor. Os portugueses SECRECY com o seu álbum "Beneath the flies" revêm-se em grupos como The Cascades, Golden Apes, Scream Silence ou os Dreadful Shadows. As músicas cantadas pelo "sonoro" Miguel B. Ribeiro são bonitas e marcantes sem magoar ouvidos mais susceptíveis. As músicas "Perfect Isolation", "A Myth" ou "Sins of Love" são os melhores exemplos e podiam perfeitamente ser passadas em discotecas alemãs. O conjunto tem uma sonoridade viva e refrescante que não se consegue definir de imediato, mas dá muito gozo ouvir as doze músicas do álbum. Deve-se acompanhar a evolução desta promissora banda.

O evento terá lugar no Hard-Club, VN Gaia no dia 24 de Março. First let’s mention the sleeve. With the case and CD tray being clear plastic they’ve ensured the photo on the last page of the booklet, and the inside back plate photo join, to form a panoramic view. That may be common, but I have never seen it before, and it’s a wonderful idea, even if the picture chosen isn’t that interesting. It also reveals the sense to try new things, although you’ll frown sternly as the initial vocal impact makes you think of an Eldritch stylist. This soon passes, so there is no need to fear vomiting.

With ‘One Day’ they roll out bright, vivid guitar which is somehow modest, and relaxed. At no stage during the album do they get ‘heavy’ and that’s an important point. Maybe by living in heat they have an economy of effort where everything is required, nothing excessive or fussy. The guitar merges with a pretty synth pattern, which ensures the vocals aren’t a morbid professor with his tongue caught in his desk drawer. A wonderfully deft rhythm section coax out the warmer side of the vocals to fantastic effect and this is dark rock, stranded in the light.

That stirred Goth thoughts, and ‘Falling’ eases off, being plainer fare, retaining sonorous vocals, but with understated, descriptive guitar and more emotion, before ‘Perfect Isolation’ has a fine double guitar/piano intro and works slowly towards a big, nagging chorus, which is something they do well. They don’t have catchy melodic chorus, they have somewhat wordy, pushy choruses, which rise up out the greyness and strut about. ‘Secrecy’ has great ideas, because the guitar and drums break up the flow, like a death metal band in slowmo, and the jumbled chorus pulls it all together and leads a breakout. ‘A Myth’ is brilliant, with tiny, rhythmical ideas flowering and bursting behind beautiful piano and guitar, as melancholia floods the air, with stunning guitar throughout.

It isn’t anywhere near perfect, mind, as no debut should be, so ‘Who’s Talking, Who’s Crying’ is hushed drama, for all its rousing guitar, and nowhere near as enchanting, but you’ll be into their sound by then, and it carries you along because the vocals orchestrate the movement, then they hit us with ‘Wonderful Life’ – yes, that one – which shows they’re perverse bastards. On into ‘Cold As Ice’ you’ll find breezy rock, skidding forward over Goth riffing and briefer vocal utterances. Building slowly, it should be fairly dull and predictable, but they do it so well, with subtle touches and seamless energy that in many ways it’s the punchiest of the lot. ‘Hollow Man’ has twinkly synth, ominously grave guitar and you fear the Metal side finally appearing, but the song just wriggles, full of rocky howling, but somehow imploring and then involving, surging along magnificently.

‘Arise & Fall’ is very slow, but often it’s the shadows which define them. Glowing guitar lights up the singing, and when it threatens to be fanciful bile, whoosh, a boosted chorus, which then send us hurtling into the springy morass of ‘Cry’, a very weird ballad, and an odd way to end it all, which leaves you just going, huh? And that is good, you see, because you simply have to get stuck into it all over again.

A confusing band in most ways Secrecy call themselves Death Grind, noticing that the borders between Goth and Metal are so easily blended nowadays, and it was only the other month I reviewed The Escape and remarked on how post-Mission Gothic Rock could still be a thrilling thing. That was talking about a stereotypical style we have all come to recognise. What Secrecy have managed to do, despite being deceptively plain (think of a de-boned Artica mixed with Theatre Of Hate) is to step to one side, in a fairly phlegmatic manner, and redefine things. And if that doesn’t inspire inquisitive Goth minds I don’t know what will.
